Howdy

1. Just for fun. The 100000000000000 note (bill in american english) that you see here was real, and came to existence in the worst of the hyperinflation crisis in Zimbabue. You can read about that in this article:

Hyperinflation in Zimbabwe

2. Now some geogebra work about exponential functions. Pay attention and send me the file.
3. Now we are going to use excel to write the calculations for some exponential situations:

  • The price of a french loaf (0.60€ initial price, 3% of inflation)
  • The growth of a population of elephants (they are known to grow at a steady rate of 7% a year, if the conditions are good)
  • The price of the same french loaf in Zimbabwe after the hyperinflation crisis. To simplify the calculations, we are going to use a average inflation rate of 500% during 25 years.

4. And then, the logarythms come to play. We are going to use them to find out the exact time in which these exponential functions reach a given value. For example, when is going the price of the french loaf to be exactly 1 €? or 10 €?

5. Seeing the image below, you can understand why the note above was needed…
